IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 3, 2025 New Mexico Joins List of Democrat States Being Sued for Refusal to Comply with Election Integrity Law Washington, D.C. - The Justice Department announced on Tuesday that it has taken legal action against six Democratic-leaning states-Delaware, Maryland, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and New Mexico-alleging that they broke federal law by refusing to release their full voter registration lists when requested. New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver has outright refused to comply and is now being sued by the DOJ. "We are not going to have free, fair, or accurate elections if we cannot maintain accurate voter rolls, and it should concern every New Mexican that Maggie Toulouse Oliver is refusing to comply with federal election integrity law," said Chairwoman Barela. "This is a perfect example of why voters are losing trust in the electoral process - and it's entirely avoidable." There are numerous examples in other states where state voter registration rolls were found to be highly inaccurate, causing discrepancies in elections. This year in New York, the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) uncovered nearly 50,000 registrants with active records in other states, thousands of duplicate entries, and hundreds of records with fake or placeholder dates of birth. Failures and issues like these sow distrust in elections, and preventing them from occurring is clearly not a priority for Secretary Oliver. While election integrity flaws and inaccurate voter registration rolls are an issue in any state, they are especially problematic in New Mexico due to the nature of our electorate. Of the 1,375,901 registered voters in our state, over 58% are NOT Democrats. In the 2025 presidential election, President Trump lost New Mexico by only 6%, and our state has seen no shortage of highly competitive statewide and congressional races in recent years. New Mexico is a competitive state where Republicans have legitimate chances of winning elections, and any discrepancies, such as erroneous voter rolls, would make it impossible for Republicans to be successful. Secretary Oliver needs to comply with the Department of Justice and adhere to basic federal election integrity laws. Failure to do so not only jeopardizes our ability to conduct free and fair elections, but it also erodes trust in our electoral process for a significant portion of New Mexicans. With the numerous problems we face in New Mexico spiraling out of control, it is critical that we conduct fair and accurate elections so every New Mexican can have confidence that their voice matters. ### |
