Mill Mountain Star Temporarily Not Illuminated

The Mill Mountain Star will not be illuminated this evening due to damage identified during an inspection earlier today.

During the assessment conducted by Roanoke's Facilities & Custodial Management Division in coordination with our lighting contractor, it was discovered that several bulbs had become detached and could swing freely. This poses a significant electrical safety hazard, as the swinging bulbs could cause live electrical connections to contact the metal frame of the Star.

In response, the Star will not be operational this evening . Our lighting contractor and staff have secured the necessary parts and will return tomorrow with a larger lift capable of reaching the top of the Star. The team will complete repairs, install the required components, and re-secure all bulbs safely. Barring any unforeseen complications, the Star is anticipated to shine red, white, and blue tomorrow night in remembrance of September 11.

We will continue to monitor progress closely and will provide updates if are any changes to this timeline.
