WASHINGTON - Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, and Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund, declared a major victory today as voters re-elected gun sense champion and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries to the U.S. Congress. Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund partnered with House Majority PAC to launch a $10 million paid media campaign to reestablish a gun sense majority in the House.
"Under the stewardship of Leader Jeffries - and in the face of MAGA opposition - the House Democratic caucus has championed common-sense measures to keep Americans safe from gun violence," said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. "Everytown is incredibly grateful to Leader Jeffries for making gun safety a top priority, and he can count on our full support as he pushes for more lifesaving laws."
"Leader Jeffries has been a champion for gun violence prevention since he joined Congress and we're proud to be in his corner as our Federal Gun Sense Lawmaker of the year," said Angela Ferrell-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action. "He recognizes that the American public wants to see an end to this crisis, and we know that he'll keep up the fight for this critical movement and the safety of our communities."
"Leader Jeffries has demonstrated day in and day out what it means to be a gun sense champion, and we know that he will continue to fight not only for New Yorkers, but for every person in America after his reelection today," said Marie Delus, a volunteer with the New York chapter of Moms Demand Action, a Marine Corps veteran and a gun violence survivor. On November 11, 2008, her nephew Pierre-Paul Jean-Paul Jr. was shot and killed. "We are proud to have Leader Jeffries fighting for gun safety in Congress and we look forward to continuing to have him as a partner as we strive for a future free of gun violence."
In June, Everytown named Leader Jeffries the 2024 Federal Gun Sense Lawmaker of the Year for his stalwart support of gun violence prevention. During his first term as leader of the House Democrats, he, along with the Democratic Caucus, have used discharge petitions to attempt to bring multiple gun violence prevention bills to the floor, including expanding background checks and closing loopholes in the background check system, banning assault weapons and large capacity magazines, and promoting secure firearm storage.
Earlier this year, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and Victory Fund announced a $45 million major electoral program, which included launching a new grassroots voter contact program to help elect gun sense candidates and defeat gun extremists up and down the ballot in key swing districts and states. These efforts focused on young voters on college campuses, voters of color, and suburban women in Arizona, California, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. As part of the electoral program, Everytown hired and deployed 36 field organizers across the ten states.
