City of Pittsburg Appoints Captain Phil Galer as Next Chief of Police
The City of Pittsburg has appointed Captain Phil Galer as the next Chief of Police for the City of Pittsburg's Police Department. This leadership transition follows the announced retirement of Chief Steve Albanese, who has served the Pittsburg community and the Department with dedication and distinction for nearly 30 years. The City extends its deep appreciation to Chief Albanese for his service, commitment, and guidance.
In preparation for selecting the next Chief, City Manager Darin Gale spent several months meeting with members of the community and Police Department and conducted a Department-wide survey to better understand its strengths, needs, and priorities. Based on that feedback and through an internal recruitment and structured interview process involving law enforcement executives and the City's Senior Executive Team, Captain Galer emerged as the clear choice to lead the Department.
"I am confident that Captain Galer is the right person to lead the City of Pittsburg's Police Department into the future," said City Manager Darin Gale. "His 25 years of dedicated service, deep understanding of this community, and strong alignment with the Department's values make him an exceptional leader. I am excited to appoint an internal candidate who is widely respected and committed to strengthening trust, transparency, and public safety."
Captain Galer has served the City of Pittsburg's Police Department for 25 years, working across nearly every division of municipal policing. He is known throughout the Department and the wider Pittsburg community for his professionalism, integrity, and commitment to service. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Occupational Studies and a Master's degree in Criminal Justice, and is a graduate of the California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Command College.
"It is an honor of a lifetime to lead the men and women of the Pittsburg Police Department and continue to be a part of this community," Captain Galer said. "I am committed to building upon the strong foundation laid by Chief Albanese and ensuring we remain responsive to the needs of our residents and businesses. I look forward to strengthening trust, transparency, and public safety alongside our dedicated staff, City leadership, and the entire Pittsburg community."
Captain Galer will assume his new role in the coming weeks. Additional information will be shared as transition details are finalized.
The City of Pittsburg invites the community to join in congratulating Captain Phil Galer on his well-earned appointment as Chief of Police.
