Applications are now open for Camp F.I.R.E. (Fostering Independence, Resilience and Empowerment), a three-day program led by the Grande Prairie Fire Department. Taking place April 24 to 26, 2026, the program offers young women and gender-diverse youth the opportunity to experience the fire service through hands-on training and mentorship. There is no cost to participate.
Camp F.I.R.E. is open to individuals aged 16 to 20 and introduces participants to the realities of a career in firefighting. The program focuses on building confidence, teamwork and problem-solving skills while providing practical exposure to emergency response equipment and scenarios. No prior fire service experience is required. Participants should be interested in learning about the fire service and willing to take part in hands-on activities in a supportive environment.
"Through Camp F.I.R.E., young women have the opportunity to explore careers in fire and emergency services in a supportive environment," said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. "It's a chance to build confidence, feel a sense of belonging and start to see a future for themselves in their community."
"For many young women, Camp F.I.R.E. is their first chance to see what the fire service really involves," said City of Grande Prairie Fire Chief, Mark VanWerkhoven. "Learning directly from firefighters gives participants a better understanding of the role, build confidence and show participants that there is a place for them in this profession."
