Airport to Provide Free Assistive Technology from Towson-Based ReBokeh

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall) is expanding its accessibility efforts through use of services provided by Towson-based ReBokeh® Vision Technologies. This technology provides free, unlimited access to the company's mobile application to those traveling through the airport. The assistive technology empowers travelers to customize how they see the airport environment in real time. BWI Marshall is the second airport worldwide, and the first in the Mid-Atlantic, to offer ReBokeh's technology to support safer, more independent air travel.

"Delivering an inclusive transportation system that works for everyone and connects people to opportunities is part of our core mission," said Maryland Transportation Secretary Katie Thomson. "BWI Marshall continues to find innovative ways to improve accessibility for our travelers and ensure no one is left behind."

ReBokeh is designed by and intended for the low-vision community. The technology is built to empower the 90% of blind and low-vision individuals who retain some functional sight. It works by allowing users to leverage the live camera feed from their mobile devices with overlaid, customized filters that adjust aspects like contrast, color hue, zoom and lighting.

"This technology is helping to ensure a confident, independent travel experience for all passengers," said Shannetta Griffin, the Executive Director/CEO of BWI Marshall Airport. "The innovative technology will help support our travelers with low vision."

At BWI Marshall, travelers with low vision can use ReBokeh to read gate and wayfinding signs, view arrival and departure boards, and locate restaurants, shops and lounges. ReBokeh AI also supports multiple languages and automatically aligns with a user's device settings, enabling real-time translation of signage, on-screen information, and the surrounding environment.

"As a low vision traveler who flies dozens of times per year, I know how important it is to feel confident and comfortable while navigating a busy airport," said Rebecca Rosenberg, the low-vision founder and CEO of ReBokeh. "We're incredibly proud that BWI Marshall- our local airport - is leading the way in creating a more accessible and enjoyable experience for low vision travelers."

Access to ReBokeh's technology is the latest in a series of initiatives and partnerships to expand accessibility for travelers at BWI Marshall. Last year the airport launched its participation in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network which provides free sunflower lanyards to travelers with hidden disabilities. BWI Marshall also partners with Morgan State University to test its autonomous wheelchair technology.
