The Stack Extra
Safe Streets is a City of Hayward initiative introduced in 2025 to transform streets with the highest rates of serious-injury and fatal collisions to make them safer for everyone-drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
Using feedback from a first round of community feedback last summer, new roadway designs for the Downtown Loop and A Street, B Street and Tennyson Road are now available to the public for review and comment.
You can learn about the new design for the Downtown Loop and provide input here at the Safe Streets Downtown project website. You can do the same for the new design for A Street, B Street and Tennyson Road here at the Safe Streets Hayward project website.
Safe Streets projects, which are funded by a federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant, are inspired by the City's Vision Zero policy objective, a commitment to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries to zero by the year 2050 that has been incorporated into the City's Local Roads Safety Plan.
The Safe Streets initiative is focused at the outset on what is called the City's High Injury Network of streets, where 75 percent of serious injuries and fatalities occur on just 14 percent of Hayward's roadways.
