Crews will perform CO 159 paving operations south of San Luis next week

Costilla County - Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Colorado Department of Transportation will complete two-day paving operations on Colorado Highway 159 between San Luis and the Colorado - New Mexico state line. Tuesday's operations will occur between Mile Points 2 and 4 and Wednesday's operations will move north between MPs 6 and 7. Motorists can expect full stops, alternating traffic guided by pilot cars and up to 15 minute delays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

Traffic Impacts

Daytime work hours range from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sept. 9 through 10. Traffic impacts include:

• Motorists should plan for 10 to 15 minute delays
• Expect one-lane alternating traffic guided by a pilot vehicle
• 40 MPH speed reduction will be enforced in the work zone
• Motorists entering the highway from a driveway or intersection must wait for a pilot car before proceeding with the flow of traffic

The following tips are to help you stay safe while traveling through maintenance and construction work zones.

• Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
• Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
• Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
• Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
• Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
• Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
• Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
• Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
• Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
• Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
