State Police investigate fatal crash in Cape Vincent

On October 10, 2024, at about 5:32 p.m., State Police Alexandria Bay was dispatched to a single-vehicle fatal motor vehicle accident on State Route 12E near the intersection of County Route 8 in the town of Cape Vincent.

The investigation determined that the vehicle was traveling westbound on State Route 12E when it exited the left shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle traveled approximately 653 feet into a field before striking a tree head-on. The car then caught fire, and the sole occupant/driver was trapped in the vehicle. Multiple attempts were made by passing motorists to remove the driver from the car but were unsuccessful. The driver was subsequently pronounced deceased after Cape Vincent Fire Department extinguished the fire.

At this time, the driver's name is not being released pending notification of the next of kin.

The State Police was assisted at the scene by the Cape Vincent Fire Department, Cape Vincent Ambulance, Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office, and Jefferson County Office of Fire and Emergency Management.

The investigation is continuing.
