Defence Secretary, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) attended the ceremonial opening of the renovated Central Bus Stand in Pettah today (08 April).The chief guest of the ceremony was Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Hon. Bimal Rathnayake, who officially declared open the renovated Pettah Central Bus Stand.
The multi-million-rupee project, which commenced in September 2025, was undertaken by the Sri Lanka Air Force under the National "Clean Sri Lanka" programme. The renovation involved comprehensive upgrades to existing buildings and surrounding infrastructure, including floor resurfacing, development of drainage systems, and other essential improvements to ensure long-term sustainability and functionality.
The newly refurbished bus stand is expected to provide a safer, more comfortable, and efficient environment for both commuters and staff, significantly improving the daily travel experience of thousands of passengers.
The project was completed in line with established industry standards and within the stipulated timeframe, reflecting the continued commitment of the Tri-Forces to support national development initiatives and public infrastructure enhancement.
The ceremony was attended by a distinguished gathering of senior government officials and military representatives, including the Secretary to the President, the Deputy Minister of Urban Development, the Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Commander of the Air Force, Chairman of Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), Inspector General of Police and the Mayor of Colombo Municipal Council, along with several other dignitaries.
