WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren, Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the below statement condemning the Trump Administration for once again extending the Department of the Treasury's 'temporary' sanctions relief for Russian oil, after General License 134B expired on May 16, 2026.
"The Trump Administration is delivering another dangerous and indefensible gift to Vladimir Putin by extending sanctions relief for Russian oil yet again. Every additional dollar the Kremlin earns from this license helps Putin finance his illegal war against Ukraine and kill innocent Ukrainians. With gas prices continuing to rise and inflation spiking, the Administration has not shown that this relief is lowering costs for American families or stabilizing global energy markets. The Administration's stated concern for energy-vulnerable countries would be more credible had it not launched this war, or if it had used policy tools to limit the prices Russia could push on those countries. Instead, the Trump Administration has helped Russia charge more for its oil cargoes by removing the risk of sanctions.
"This decision is particularly galling given that Russia just inflicted one of the deadliest attacks on Ukraine's capital last week, continues to deliberately strike American businesses operating in Ukraine and has aided Iran in its targeting of American servicemembers. Continuing to show weakness like this will only invite more aggression and put a just end to the war in Ukraine further away."
