Neal Statement on War Powers Resolution Vote

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Richard E. Neal released the following statement after the House voted down a War Powers Resolution to halt U.S. military operations in Iran.

"Tonight, I voted in favor of the War Powers Resolution because the Constitution is explicitly clear about where the power to declare war lies, and that is with Congress. Unfortunately, we have a GOP that is subservient to the President.

"Since day one of this administration, congressional Republicans have completely abdicated their responsibility to serve as a check on the Executive. Rather than forcing the President to seek congressional authorization and make his case in plain view of the American people, clearly outlining his objectives and end game, Republicans are rubber-stamping a war that the American people do not want. Meanwhile, gas prices are on the rise, and the Pentagon is estimating that each day the U.S. spends in Iran is costing taxpayers over $1 billion.

"Most pressing is the fact that we are putting the men and women of our military in harm's way without any justification, nor any semblance of a plan. Six U.S. service members have already lost their lives. The least we owe their families and loved ones is an answer as to what their son or daughter died for."
