Hill Research at the Opening of AstraZeneca's Kendall Square R&D Centre

Hill Research | 5 October 2026

CAMBRIDGE, MA, October 5, 2026 - Hill Research was glad to be at the opening of AstraZeneca's new strategic research and development centre and Alexion headquarters in Kendall Square, joining colleagues from across the Boston and Cambridge life sciences community. Hill Research was represented by CEO Dr. Louise Liu.

About the Centre

The centre brings close to 1,500 research, development, commercial and corporate colleagues into a single purpose-built space of more than 570,000 square feet, in the middle of Kendall Square. It builds on Alexion's established presence on Binney Street and becomes the home of AstraZeneca's rare disease organisation in the United States.

Rare disease was the thread running through the evening. The science is hard and the populations are small, which is exactly the combination that makes every patient's data matter more, and every analytical decision harder to get right.

Why It Matters to Us

There is a bet underneath a building like this one, and it is worth naming. Putting discovery, development and commercial teams on one floor plate is a wager that the hardest problems live between those groups rather than inside any one of them.

That matches what we see in our own work. In clinical data, failures are almost never contained inside a single step. They appear at the handover: between the protocol and the specification, between the specification and the derivation, between a result and the person who has to sign for it. Shortening the distance between the people who own those steps is a real intervention, not a cosmetic one.

Rare disease sharpens this further. When a study has few participants, there is no sample size to absorb a questionable decision, and the reasoning behind every derived value has to survive being read years later by somebody who was not in the room.

Thank You

We went to listen. For a young company building AI for clinical research, evenings like this one are a chance to learn from organisations that have spent decades turning science into treatments, and to understand better where software can genuinely help rather than where it merely looks impressive.

Congratulations to AstraZeneca and Alexion on opening the centre, and thank you to everyone who made the evening what it was.
