The River's Edge temporarily closed

(September 11, 2026) The River's Edge Ice Arena is closed temporarily for 4-5 weeks for facility maintenance. Closing the facility allows the City to work with contractors to address the facility issues and get The River's Edge back into operation as quickly as possible.

This summer's high humidity created challenges for the facility's two ice rinks. Davenport Parks and Recreation staff noted issues with moisture buildup beginning in mid-July and took proactive steps to combat the environmental issues, including additional cleaning, moisture and temperature logging, and air quality testing.

While moisture problems are not uncommon for a sports facility housing two indoor ice rinks, this summer's conditions exacerbated the issues and led to the discovery of mold in two of the locker rooms. The type of mold identified is a common environmental mold and is not considered toxic mold. It can cause irritation for people who are sensitive to certain allergens. Out of an abundance of caution, the locker rooms were closed for public use.

"We know this temporary closure is disappointing, especially for the families, athletes, and community members who count on The River's Edge," said Becca Niles, Parks and Recreation Interim Director. "We share that frustration, but our priority is taking the time now to address these issues properly and reopen as quickly and safely as possible."

During the facility closure, Parks and Recreation customer service will move to the Fairmount Community Center (2980 N. Fairmount St.) with reduced customer service hours. Administrative staff will relocate to other city facilities. The current session of the Learn to Skate program will be cancelled, and full refunds will be issued. Youth hockey leagues have been notified that they will be unable to utilize the facility during the closure.

Beginning Monday, September 14, a restoration contractor will start remediation efforts. This includes sanitization of all affected surfaces, flooring, and air ducts using plant-based antimicrobial products. The City of Davenport will provide updates on the work and reopening dates on its Parks and Recreation Facebook page.
