City of Indianola Moves Trick-or-Treating to Halloween

At its regular meeting Monday, July 21, 2025, the Indianola City Council approved moving trick-or-treating in Indianola to Halloween on October 31 from 6-8 p.m.

Like many other greater Des Moines metro communities, this move forgoes the longtime Beggars' Night tradition on October 30. It becomes the new designated date for future planning, unless otherwise determined by the Chief of Police for the safety of the public.

View Resolution

  • Parents/Guardians should accompany their children and help them in selecting their treats.
  • Mask holes for costumes should be large enough to see through easily.
  • Use a flashlight to help see better in the dark.
  • To avoid tripping, do not wear loose or long costumes.
  • Wear reflective colored costumes.
  • Walk on sidewalks or as near to the curb as possible.
  • Observe safety rules when crossing or walking streets.
  • Motorists should drive at reduced speeds and watch for pedestrians in areas where trick-or-treating is occurring.
  • Stay away from open flames, including jack-o-lanterns with candles in them.
  • Keep decorations away from open flames and other heat sources, such as light bulbs and heaters.
  • Keep exits clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.

We encourage all residents to respect homes with their lights off, as it may be home to someone who is not interested in participating in the yearly event.
