Shares of Cipher Digital (CIFR) have lost 20% in the past month. The S&P 500 gained 1.8% over the same period. None of the company's announcements this month, including a longer lease at its Barber Lake site, explains the decline. Peers Core Scientific and Riot Platforms lost 15.1% and 23.7% over the same period, which points to pressure across the group. Still, a sharp drop while the broader market rises is a fair moment to ask how the stock holds up when the whole market falls. How has Cipher Digital stock held up when the whole market was falling?
Cipher Digital's Slides Run Triple The Market's, On Average
History shows that Cipher shares tend to fall roughly three times as far as the S&P 500 during broader market shocks. The stock has been through five shocks since it began trading in 2020. Across those episodes, Cipher dropped an average of 42.4%, compared with a 13.4% decline for the index.
During the 2025 tariff shock, for example, the company lost 65% from its high to its low. The S&P 500 lost 19% over that same stretch.
Yet the stock has generally rebounded quickly. Cipher eventually returned to its pre-shock high after all five market disruptions, with a median wait from the low of 2.8 months. That historical track record does not guarantee future performance. Furthermore, those five shocks do not capture the worst stretch for Cipher: the stock lost 97% from its 2021 peak to its 2022 low.
How Do Cipher Digital's Sales, Losses And Debt Look?
Cipher is currently facing widening losses, debt that nearly equals its market value, and consecutive quarters of falling sales. Revenue dropped 43.0% from a year earlier in the latest quarter, following a 29% decline in the prior period. During an August 4, 2026 call, management said the company shut down bitcoin mining at its Black Pearl site as it shifts toward renting out data centers.
The company is now losing more money than it brings in. Over the last twelve months, Cipher recorded an operating loss equal to 210% of its revenue. That is up from 85% a year earlier. Meanwhile, its debt stands at 98.7% of its market value, a steep figure compared with 21% for the S&P 500.
Which Risks Are Growing At Cipher Digital Now?
Beyond falling revenue, Cipher faces rising construction costs and a tightening debt market. During the August 4 call, management acknowledged ongoing inflation in labor and equipment, and the company expects those expenses to creep higher. Executives also pointed out that credit spreads are widening as a wave of AI infrastructure debt hits the market.
Energy access for future sites remains unresolved. Cipher had been waiting for results from a Texas grid-connection process. Those results were delayed, and management indicated it was too early to predict a new timeline. By mid-September, the company secured conditional grid classifications for 3.2 gigawatts of capacity. However, these classifications stop short of actually authorizing power connections.
Cipher might also need to sell more shares. While management does not expect to need new equity based on its current forecasts, executives cautioned that securing a very large new deal would require raising capital this way. The outstanding share count has already grown 64.3% in three years.
How To Act On CIFR?
Now you know CIFR better. And that's our purpose: to make you informed before you invest your money. However, making a bet on a single stock carries its own risks.
There is a smarter choice. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has beaten the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking.
