Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Uifa'atali Amata released the following message for New Year's Day.
"Happy New Year! As we complete a busy 2025 and ring in 2026, I'm humbled and thankful that I represent the wonderful people of American Samoa. Together, we've experienced many blessings from God this year, and I'm optimistic for the year ahead.
"In Congress, right before Christmas week, we finished up the 3.8 percent raise for our military in 2026. This much-deserved increase continues to build on last year's largest-ever raise, as Congress is prioritizing better compensation for our military.
"It's hard to believe 2025 has flown by already and we are halfway through the 119th Congress. This year brought many changes. When I was first sent to Washington to represent you, President Obama was in office, so I've been through these changes before. I continue to emphasize bipartisanship in the legislation I support, and making American Samoa my first focus.
"Any review of 2025 must include the importance of the Executive Order restoring fishing access, signed on our historic 125th Flag Day. This was a longtime objective that followed years of effort, with congressional testimony, and support from our leaders in U.S. fishing and U.S. food security. This was a milestone achievement for our people, and I appreciate the President's decision and all who had a part in support for American Samoa's fishing.
"Throughout 2026, I will be focused on what matters to American Samoa, seeking opportunities to support health care, education, veterans and military families. God bless our islands and the United States as we start this new year. May God bless and guide you and your families."
Psalm 20:4 (NIV) May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
