High-level Aqaba Process meeting on terrorism in the Balkans held in Sofia Undersecretary Tripodi: Government strongly committed to regional stability

A high-level meeting of the Aqaba Process on countering terrorism and Islamist extremism in the Balkans took place in Sofia. Representing Italy on behalf of Minister Tajani, Undersecretary Maria Tripodi participated in the discussions.

"The effectiveness of governmental responses to terrorism must address its regional drivers. It is crucial to prevent radicalisation by paying particular attention to terrorist propaganda on the internet, which targets young people and individuals from vulnerable communities," stated Undersecretary Tripodi during the session on illegal migration and combating violent extremism online. "The Italian Government stands ready to provide any necessary technical assistance to counter disinformation and promote a constant dialogue with civil society and its organisations, to prevent misleading interpretations of religion from leading to the emergence of new terrorists."

She further emphasised that technical assistance for the secure management of Balkan borders is a top priority, as these borders are crossed by irregular migration routes from the Middle East, which could allow the infiltration of radicalised individuals, including returning foreign fighters. Tripodi reaffirmed the Italian Government's commitment to stability in the Balkans, highlighting the periodic meetings of the "Friends of the Western Balkans" working group, the latest of which was recently held in Rome.

The Aqaba Process is an informal high-level discussion forum, launched in 2015 and chaired by King Abdullah II of Jordan. It aims to strengthen international coordination and facilitate the exchange of expertise and information, using a regional approach. Italy will host the next meeting in Rome, which will focus on the situation in West Africa.
