Panthers Forward, Which Has Saved Students $5.2 Million, Is Accepting Applications

Applications are now open for the University of Pittsburgh's Panthers Forward program, which annually provides 150 graduating seniors with up to $5,000 in direct federal student loan relief.

The first-of-its-kind initiative is open to students on the University's Pittsburgh campus who use federal loans to fund their last year of college. Along with receiving debt relief, participants benefit from mentoring by Pitt alumni and programming focused on successfully navigating life after graduation.

The program has a lasting impact, as these participants shared:

"When Panthers Forward announced I could have a mentor, I thought, 'Yes, a thousand times yes.' Jason O'Connor's willingness to offer his time, his advice and his expertisewas so helpful, and a good introduction to what it means to be a mentor." - Cameron Chase (A&S '23)

"Panthers Forward changed my life! It made me debt free, taught me about post-grad finances and led me to meeting my mentor, Debra Thompson." - Anna McMoil (SHRS '24)

"The resources, support and knowledge I received through Panthers Forward make me feel more confident in my financial future and will help me long after graduation." - Pocket Pizzutillo (ENGR '25)

Since 2019, Panthers Forward has provided nearly $5.2 million in direct federal student loan relief to more than 1,050 Pitt students. The program's only condition is a voluntary one: that students pay it forward to the next generation, either financially or by contributing their time and talents after graduation.

Applications to join the Panthers Forward Class of 2026 close at 11:59 p.m. Sept. 28. Here's how to apply.

And, alumni, learn more about becoming a mentor.
