CANYON, Texas - Area high school students can learn how to build STEM-related apps and learn AI modeling at a free new summer camp at West Texas A&M University.

The new "Molecules to Megawatts: AI for Future Energy" Computational Summer Camp, scheduled for June 22 to July 10, will offer a fellowship for up to 10 prospective students to attend the camp, thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Students will explore basic machine learning and artificial intelligence, develop an app related to next-generation energy materials and build dye-sensitized solar cells from scratch, among other opportunities, said camp organizer Dr. Juganta Roy, assistant professor of chemistry in the Department of Chemistry and Physics in WT's Paul and Virginia Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences.

"We're hoping to increase student interest in science, technology, engineering and math education and careers," Roy said. "They'll also gain invaluable experience in building AI models and enjoy mentorship from WT undergraduate students."

Application deadline is May 31. Click here to apply.

The new Computational Science Camp is one of nearly 100 summer youth camps offered between May and September by the University.

Providing regionally impactful programs is a key component of the University's long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.

That plan is fueled by the One West comprehensive fundraising campaign, which raised more than $200 million dollars, the largest such campaign in Texas Panhandle history.
