The United States District Court for the District of Kansas announces the selection of Jennifer B. Wieland as the next United States Magistrate Judge in Kansas City, Kansas. Ms. Wieland is a graduate of the University of Virginia. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Government in 1997, and a Juris Doctorate in 2002. While at the University of Virginia School of Law, she served as Executive Editor of the Virginia Law Review and the Virginia Sports & Entertainment Law Journal.
Following graduation from law school, Ms. Wieland clerked for the Honorable Lourdes G. Baird with the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, CA. After her clerkship, Ms. Wieland practiced in the Orange County, CA office of Latham & Watkins before relocating to Kansas in 2005.
In 2008, Ms. Wieland joined her current firm, Berkowitz Oliver LLP, as an associate. She became a partner in 2013 and a Co-Managing Partner in 2023. At Berkowitz Oliver, she has represented companies in complex civil litigation. Her regular practice areas include class action defense, privacy, consumer disputes, product liability, employment, intellectual property, and advertising litigation. She served as liaison counsel for two significant District of Kansas multi-district litigation (MDL) cases.
Ms. Wieland is currently serving in her final year of a three-year term on the District of Kansas Bench-Bar Committee. She was also selected as a member of the Western District of Missouri's Category II List of Neutrals, where she conducts court-ordered mediations. In addition to work for her firm, Ms. Wieland regularly represents U.S. veterans pro bono through the KCMBA/KCMBF Military Matters Program and provides training to other attorneys on military discharge upgrades.
Ms. Wieland will be sworn in as a U.S. Magistrate Judge upon the completion of an FBI background check. She will succeed Magistrate Judge Teresa J. James, who intends to retire in Spring 2026, after 12 years on the bench.
