As a first-generation college student, Jelaine Joy Esguerra understands the importance of receiving guidance and support to help navigate both academic and personal challenges. It's what inspires her to strive toward becoming a K-12 counselor.
Despite balancing a full course load while experiencing moments of grief due to loss within her family during her time at Stanislaus State, Esguerra has persevered and is on the fast track to making her dream a reality.
Esguerra will graduate with her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in just her third year since graduating from Ceres High School. She then plans to enroll in Stan State's Professional Clinical Counselor (PCC) program in hopes of serving others across the Central Valley.
"Through my work, I want to help create a school environment where students feel seen, supported and capable of succeeding," Esguerra said. "This includes not only providing academic guidance but also supporting students' emotional well-being and helping them build confidence in themselves. By investing in students and their growth, my goal is to contribute to strengthening our community and supporting future generations in our community."
Esguerra found a supportive environment at Stan State, which offered an affordable, high-quality education close to home.
"Many of my high school teachers had also attended Stan State, and hearing them speak so highly about their experiences really encouraged me to consider it," Esguerra said. "Seeing those mentors who I looked up to had gone to school here made me feel confident that I would have a meaningful and positive experience as well.
"From the moment I stepped on campus, I could see myself here. It felt like a place where I could get involved, connect with others and make the most of my college experience."
Esguerra said she "stepped out of her comfort zone" during her first semester as a Warrior, starting Stan State's National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) chapter and serving as the president, as well as working at the University Student Center, where her peers said she played a critical role in advancing major initiatives. She has also enhanced the student experience and well-being by helping introduce digital signage for student organizations and advocating for the creation of the Relaxation Room.
Her leadership and impact on campus have not gone unnoticed.
"Jelaine has been an exceptional student leader whose impact on Stan State will extend well beyond her time on campus," said ASI & SC Executive Director Cesar Rumayor. "Throughout her time as a leader, she has consistently demonstrated professionalism, compassion and an unwavering commitment to serving students. Her ability to balance strategic leadership with genuine care for her peers has helped strengthen the Student Center and the overall student experience. Her legacy at Stan State will be defined by meaningful contributions, lasting relationships, and a true dedication to making campus better for others."
"She has ensured that the student voice remains central by actively engaging in planning, collaboration and advocacy efforts that will benefit current and future students," said Interim Student Center Leadership Coordinator Anahi Bauman. "What truly sets Jelaine apart is her ability to lead with both purpose and heart. She is intentional, collaborative and driven to uplift those around her, consistently turning ideas into action. Jelaine is not only a leader but an inspiration, and she is well-positioned to make a lasting positive impact in her community and beyond."
"Through these experiences, I've been able to connect with people across our diverse campus community and build relationships that I truly value," Esguerra said. "I found a community that made campus feel like home. I met people who pushed me to grow, supported me along the way and helped me build my confidence. Getting involved didn't just keep me busy. It gave me a sense of purpose and direction in everything I was doing.
"My time as a student leader, particularly through the University Student Center and my campus involvement, has strengthened my passion for supporting others and creating spaces where individuals feel connected, supported and valued."

"One moment that stands out was working to bring a comfort dog to campus before finals week to help relieve stress for students. It took planning and advocacy, but seeing it come to life made it all worth it! Watching students pause, smile and feel supported during a stressful time was so fulfilling. It showed me that meaningful impact doesn't always come from big moments, but from showing up for others in the ways that matter most. That experience motivated me to continue to do more."
"The staff member who has had the greatest impact on me is Cesar Rumayor, executive director of Associated Students, Inc. and the University Student Center. I first met Cesar during my freshman year, in my very first week working at the Student Center. From the beginning, he created a space where I felt supported and encouraged me to grow, helping me build confidence and step into leadership in ways I never imagined. He challenged me to think bigger, pushed me to find my voice and continuously believed in my potential, even at times when I was still learning to believe in it myself. His guidance has played a significant role in shaping not only the leader I've become but also the person I am today."
"One piece of advice I would give to current and future students is to get involved and take advantage of the resources available to you. Whether that's joining an organization, attending campus events or connecting with faculty and staff, these opportunities can help you grow, find your community and make your college experience more meaningful. For future students, I encourage you to come in with an open mind and be willing to explore. College is not only about academics but also about discovering who you are and where you belong."
