Shreve Passes Historic Anti-Scam Legislation Through Committee

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Jefferson Shreve (R-IN) announced this week that provisions of his Dismantling Foreign Scam Syndicates Act were included in the bipartisan State Department Reauthorization Bill, which successfully passed out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Shreve's legislation establishes a first-of-its-kind interagency task force, led by the State Department, to dismantle large-scale foreign scam operations. The task force will unite federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to combat these transnational criminal organizations and protect Americans from financial fraud. The bill specifically addresses the Chinese government's heavy involvement in enabling these criminal networks.

"The Committee took historic steps this week to protect millions of Americans," said Shreve. "Hoosiers in particular have felt the impact of foreign criminal organizations draining their pockets through fraudulent schemes. I created an interagency task force to combat these sophisticated operations - and this legislation is now headed to the House Floor. We also advanced reforms to fix a broken State Department, promote fiscal responsibility, and put America First."

The State Department Reauthorization Bill marks the first comprehensive update since 2002 and restores accountability and structure to the Department. Provisions advanced by Rep. Shreve include:

  • Preventing U.S. taxpayer dollars from supporting pro-Hamas UN organizations
  • Ensuring U.S. contributions to the United Nations are used only for their intended purpose
  • Strengthening oversight of funds to advance an America First agenda
  • Combating Mexican cartels
  • Creating a U.S. Special Envoy for Burma

Shreve has made protecting Americans from foreign scams a top priority in Congress. He launched the bipartisan STOP Scams Caucus, led a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and introduced targeted legislation to shut down international scam syndicates.
