LOS ANGELES - Last week, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) officials and staff celebrated representatives from nine major airlines operating at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at the July 9, 2026 special meeting of the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC). The airlines were recognized as part of LAWA's Fly Quieter Program, which acknowledges efforts by air carriers to reduce aircraft noise through voluntary operational and technical measures, as well as engagement with communities affected by aircraft noise.
"The LAX Fly Quieter Program was designed to help facilitate collaboration amongst airport communities, LAWA, and our airline partners in pursuit of effective solutions to managing aircraft noise," said Michael Christensen, Chief Airport Development Officer of LAWA. "Whether through stakeholder engagement, operational best practices, or proactive noise-reduction initiatives, the award recipients are demonstrating a strong commitment to being good partners in these efforts. We congratulate our airline partners on their achievements and thank them for their continued participation."
The program, now in its sixth year, is an education and recognition program designed to encourage quieter airline operations by commercial air carriers at LAX. All airlines are rated in accordance with five scoring elements:
Airlines were recognized within three categories based on the number of average daily operations (landings and take-offs) conducted at LAX.
The winners for each category are as follows:
Another innovative aspect of the LAX Fly Quieter Program is its Bonus Points Category. The LAX Fly Quieter Program was the first commercial airport "fly quiet" program in the nation to award additional bonus points for voluntarily implementing noise-reduction initiatives and engaging with stakeholders and neighboring communities, such as participation in the LAX/Community Noise Roundtable. Through this approach, airlines can improve their rankings not only through operational performance, but also by taking proactive steps to reduce aircraft noise and actively participating in stakeholder and community engagement efforts.
Since the program began, at least one airline has participated in every LAX/Community Noise Roundtable meeting, fostering greater trust, understanding, and collaboration among LAWA, airlines, stakeholders, and community members by bringing valuable airline and pilot perspectives into conversations about aircraft noise and community concerns.
