Creative Greensboro’s Downtown Arts Special Commission for City Hall on Display

Creative Greensboro's 2026 Downtown Arts Special Commission for City Hall is now on display. The new artwork showcases Greensboro as a city where nature, humans, and technology are interconnected and move from our past to the future.

Local artist Mónica Hilário has created an original painting entitled "Gate City, Carried Forward," which features radiating lines that unite images of a locomotive train, paper planes, and two-winged human figures in a woven structure. The elements illustrate Greensboro's textile and railroad transportation history, showcase the contemporary presence of the innovative aeronautics industry in our city, and highlight human connection. The artist also incorporated a nighttime Greensboro skyline into the artwork.

A 10-foot by 20-foot vinyl reproduction of "Gate City, Carried Forward" has been installed in the Melvin Municipal Office Building (MMOB), 300 W. Washington St., on the council chamber wall, visible from the Plaza entrance, and will be on view through July 2027.

"The composition presents a city moving toward a future in which past industries and emerging systems operate as part of a continuous transformation," Hilário said. "The past is not behind us; it is the engine that drives the future forward. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Greensboro's visual legacy and hope the painting encourages others to see our community as something we continually build together."
