Former Southern University interim chancellor Margaret Ambrose passes away, leaving a legacy of dedication and service

Southern University mourns the passing of Margaret Ann Styles Ambrose, a distinguished former interim chancellor whose dedication to higher education and student success left a lasting impact on the institution and its community. Ambrose died Sunday, March 16.
Ambrose began her career in public education in Rapides and Avoyelles parishes and later transitioned to higher education, where she served in various capacities at Southern University. Rising through the ranks, she held positions including assistant professor of English, assistant to the vice chancellor for academic affairs, assistant to the chancellor, executive associate to the Southern University System president and executive vice chancellor. She notably served as interim chancellor for Southern University and A&M College from May 2007 through May 2008. Her leadership and commitment to the University were instrumental in shaping policies and programs that benefited students and faculty alike.
An honors graduate of Grambling College, Ambrose continued her studies at Indiana University, where she earned a master's degree. She was a dedicated advocate for academic excellence, student leadership, and community involvement. Her passion extended beyond her professional life, as she was an active member of Greater King David Baptist Church and engaged in numerous civic and social organizations.
Southern University extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Margaret Ambrose. Her contributions to the University and the broader community will not be forgotten, and her legacy of excellence and service will continue to inspire generations to come.
