Quarterly Coal Report—Second Quarter 2026

The Quarterly Coal Report provides detailed quarterly data on U.S. coal production, exports, imports, receipts, prices, consumption, quality, and stocks. The report also provides data on U.S. coke production, consumption, stocks, imports, and exports. All data for 2024 and previous years are final. All data for 2025 and 2026 are preliminary.

  • U.S. coal production during the second quarter of 2026 totaled 125.4 million short tons (MMst), which was 4.9% lower than the previous quarter and 2.2% lower than the second quarter of 2025. Production in the Western region, which represented about 49.2% of total U.S. coal production in the second quarter of 2026, totaled about 61.6 MMst (9.6% lower than the second quarter of 2025).
  • U.S. coal exports for the second quarter of 2026 (26.8 MMst) increased 13.3% from the first quarter of 2026. The average price of U.S. coal exports during the second quarter of 2026 was $110.68 per short ton.
  • The United States continued to import coal primarily from Colombia (82.6%) and Canada (8.4%). U.S. coal imports in the second quarter of 2026 totaled 0.7 MMst. The average price of U.S. coal imports during the second quarter of 2026 was $139.27 per short ton.
  • Steam coal exports totaled 13 MMst (25.1% higher than the first quarter of 2026). Metallurgical coal exports totaled 13.9 MMst (4.2% higher than the first quarter of 2026).
  • U.S. coal consumption totaled 88.8 MMst in the second quarter of 2026, which was 15.5% lower than the 105 MMst reported in the first quarter of 2026 and 10.2% lower than the 98.8 MMst reported in the second quarter of 2025. The electric power sector accounted for about 90.5% of the total U.S. coal consumption in the second quarter of 2026.
  • In the second quarter of 2026, coal stocks grew to 145.5 MMst from 137.8 MMst at the end of the first quarter of 2026 (a 5.6% increase). Stocks in the electric power sector increased to 118.3 MMst from 110.9 MMst at the end of the first quarter of 2026.
