If you're tired of living through the bladder-busting experience of being stuck in an I-70 traffic jam through Wentzville, we have good news! MoDOT has released more details about the expansion of I-70 from Wentzville to Warrenton, as well as improvements along I-64.
This $600 million project is the largest in MoDOT history. MoDOT just selected a contractor team for the project, which is scheduled to begin construction in spring 2025 and finish in 2028.
Information and renderings released by MoDOT indicate the following improvements in St. Charles County:
I-70 from Wentzville to Warrenton
-
Add a third lane in each direction
-
Reconstruct existing lanes with new concrete and subgrade
I-70 at Wentzville
-
Expand to five lanes in each direction through the railroad bottleneck (building a new railroad bridge to accommodate)
-
Total reconfiguration of the westbound I-70 exit at Route Z. Traffic exiting I-70 to Route Z will no longer "weave" through traffic entering I-70 from I-64.
I-64 / I-70 Interchange at Wentzville
-
Build two dedicated lanes for the exit ramp from westbound I-64 to westbound I-70.
-
Traffic from westbound I-64 onto westbound I-70, from southbound US 61 to westbound I-70, and from westbound I-70 to Route Z, will be routed into "collector lanes" that are separated from the main I-70 traffic lanes by a physical barrier.
-
Traffic from the collector lanes won't merge with westbound I-70 until after the Route Z exit, eliminating the current severe "weaving" of traffic entering and exiting I-70 at the same spot.
I-70 at Foristell
-
Major expansion to accommodate heavy truck traffic and continued growth in the westernmost portion of St. Charles County
-
The all new interchange will include two separate bridges for northbound and southbound traffic and large roundabouts on both sides of I-70, connecting the ramps to the outer roads (similar to I-70 eastbound at Lake St. Louis Boulevard).
I-64 from Route K to I-70
-
Add a third lane in each direction
