International Media and Information Literacy Institute under auspices of UNESCO launched in Abuja

UNESCO and the Federal Republic of Nigeria officially launched the Category II International Media and Information Literacy Institute (C2 IMILI) on 29 and 30 April 2026 in Abuja, Nigeria, marking a major milestone in global efforts to advance media and information literacy (MIL).

Across the world, the need to empower people with MIL has become urgent. Disinformation continues to undermine social cohesion, democratic processes and economic stability. At the same time, ensuring that all people can access, evaluate and use information effectively represents one of the greatest development opportunities of our era.

Governments are increasingly adopting MIL policies and initiatives. Yet translating these commitments into real impact requires coordinated, evidence-based action and strong partnerships. C2 IMILI was created to help meet this need.

Hosted by Nigeria, C2 IMILI becomes the first international observatory dedicated to media and information literacy. The Institute will support countries in monitoring progress, generating research, strengthening public-private partnerships, and advancing policies that promote informed, resilient and peaceful societies.

The two-day launch event brought together over 350 government leaders and representatives of international organizations, civil society, academia and media stakeholders.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, reaffirmed the country's leadership in advancing MIL:
