By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
WHEREAS, beef cattle have been central to Virginia's agriculture since the 1600s, remaining a vital industry that drives the economy and supports thousands of jobs; and
WHEREAS, the cattle industry is a vital part of Virginia's agricultural heritage, and in 2024 was the Commonwealth's second largest commodity, contributing more than $712 million in cash receipts to Virginia's economy; and
WHEREAS, more than 15,000 Virginia cattle producers graze cattle on more than 1.9 million acres of Virginia pastureland; and
WHEREAS, Virginia's beef cattle inventory totaled more than 575,000 head in 2026 with Augusta, Rockingham, Russell, Bedford, and Pittsylvania counties leading the state in total inventory; and
WHEREAS, Virginia beef exports were valued at more than $41 million in 2025, with Canada and Mexico being the top destination countries; and
WHEREAS, a three-ounce serving of lean beef is about 150 calories and an excellent source of protein and nine other essential nutrients like zinc, iron, and B vitamins; and
WHEREAS, National Beef Month is celebrated annually in May to recognize the vital contributions of the U.S. beef industry, honoring farmers and ranchers while highlighting beef as a nutritious, versatile, and essential part of the American diet; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, Governor, do hereby recognize May 2026, as VIRGINIA BEEF MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
