MCC Advances Compact Development with Fiji to Drive Economic Growth

SUVA, FIJI - The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the Government of Fiji today marked a step toward designing an MCC compact to unlock private sector-led growth and strengthen economic ties. The Compact Development Funding Agreement, signed by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Fiji Minister for Finance, Commerce, and Business Development Esrom Immanuel, enables joint technical work to design projects that will strengthen Fiji's economy and create opportunities for U.S. trade and investment.

"This is more than an agreement-it's a catalyst for prosperity," said Deputy Secretary Landau. "By working with Fiji, we aim to design a compact that drives investment in Fiji, opens new markets for American companies, and strengthens the foundation for a free and open Indo-Pacific."

"This agreement reflects Fiji's commitment to good governance, economic freedom, and investments that foster growth," said Minister Immanuel. "Together, we will tackle key development challenges and create lasting benefits for Fijians."

MCC's Board selected Fiji as eligible to develop an MCC compact program in August 2025, recognizing Fiji's reform momentum and its vital role as a regional economic hub for transportation, business, healthcare, and workforce development. Compacts are five-year agreements between MCC and an eligible country to fund programs that target key constraints to economic growth. This agreement launches a data-driven design process to identify priority sectors and design projects that advance Fiji's growth and shared interests in the Pacific.

By strengthening the business enabling environment, developing infrastructure, and modernizing critical systems, an MCC compact can lower costs, reduce investment risk, and unlock private capital-benefiting American exporters and investors while supporting job creation in both Fiji and the United States.

MCC has a growing presence in the Pacific Islands, with active or developing programs in Solomon Islands, Kiribati, and Tonga; and a former project in Vanuatu. MCC has invested or already committed nearly $115 million to help Pacific Islands tackle their unique challenges to economic growth and connect these nations to global markets and U.S. businesses.

The Millennium Challenge Corporation is an independent U.S. Government agency focused on unlocking growth through results-driven foreign assistance. MCC's grants support large-scale infrastructure, strategic reforms, and economic modernization. MCC advances America's economic and strategic interests by delivering measurable returns to both recipients and U.S. taxpayers-expanding commercial opportunities for U.S. businesses, reducing the influence of competitors, and reinforcing global environments aligned with American values.
