CABEI's US$1 million in humanitarian aid will support Guatemalan families affected by climate events throughout the country

Guatemala City, January 8, 2025.- In view of the orange alert declared in Guatemala due to the increase in cold fronts, heavy rains, lower temperatures and strong winds that have affected the country in recent weeks, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) approved an emergency aid of US$1 million to provide assistance to affected families.

The climatic events, which occurred in different regions of the country during 2024, caused landslides, subsidence, mudflows and floods, affecting the safety of the population and causing structural damage to homes, highways and rural roads, among other national infrastructure.

With this aid, CABEI seeks to collaborate with government authorities' efforts to mitigate the damage and contribute with humanitarian assistance through the purchase of food, kitchen and hygiene kits, water purification filters, basic necessities, medicines, medical and biosecurity equipment. The aid may also be used for the construction or rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure.

The region faces frequent climate crises that result in disasters and emergencies. In response, the Bank stands in solidarity with the Guatemalan people and reinforces its support to continue helping its member countries take action in prevention, mitigation and recovery, with the aim of ensuring the safety of people and the protection of their livelihoods.
