Ibrahimović attends the World Forum for Democracy in Strasbourg: Democracy should be a tool that unites us

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimović addressed the 12th World Forum for Democracy, held in Strasbourg. In addition to delivering opening remarks at the plenary session, he participated in a panel discussion on "Elections and Value Divides."

In his opening address, Ibrahimović emphasised that the forum's theme, "Democracy and Diversity," holds particular importance for Montenegro-a country that demonstrates how diversity can be a strength when nurtured and respected.

Our country takes pride in its rich social fabric. Over the centuries, we have learned that unity and respect for diversity enrich society, and that these values must be continuously cultivated. Democracy should serve as a tool to unite us, not as a source of division, he stated.

Ibrahimović highlighted the importance of free and fair elections for democratic development and addressed modern electoral challenges, including polarization, disinformation, and foreign influence. He stressed the need to promote responsible and ethical communication on social media, so the digital space can be a platform for constructive dialogue.

It is our responsibility to build a society where differences are seen as advantages rather than obstacles, where political competition does not harm citizens, and where, after each electoral cycle, we all feel part of the same community, Ibrahimović said.

Marking the 12th World Forum for Democracy in a year that celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe-founded in the challenging post-WWII period to protect human rights and the rule of law-Ibrahimović noted that this oldest pan-European political organization continues to face numerous challenges in upholding its core values.

On the sidelines of the Forum, Ibrahimović met with President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Theodoros Rousopoulos to discuss ways to deepen the partnership and underscore the need for continued international support for the Western Balkans.

Montenegro, as a leader in EU accession negotiations and a Council of Europe member, is fully committed to meeting Council of Europe standards and promoting its values, Ibrahimović affirmed. Rousopoulos commended Montenegro's commitment to implementing necessary reforms to achieve its goal of becoming the EU's next member.

In Strasbourg, Ibrahimović also met with President of the European Court of Human Rights Marko Bošnjak. He emphasised the importance of the European Convention on Human Rights and reiterated Montenegro's dedication to respecting and implementing the Court's judgments. The meeting addressed challenges member states face in implementing rulings.
