Kaine Statement After Blocking Extreme Anti-Reproductive Freedom Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) released the following statement after voting to block the advancement of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act:

"The 119th Congress began weeks ago, and Republicans have not put up a single bill for a vote to lower costs, boost the economy, or strengthen public safety. Instead, they tried to advance today on an extreme bill in search of a problem. Infanticide is already prohibited by state and federal law, and I've previously supported legislation to reaffirm this in the Senate. This bill is just the latest attempt to stigmatize women and doctors, to make it harder for women to access the health care they need-and to distract Americans from the fact that congressional Republicans have no plan to lower costs for working families or make government work better for the American people. I'm glad Senate Democrats successfully blocked it from advancing to a final vote."

Existing law ensures that all children born alive, regardless of the circumstances of that birth, are equally protected under the law. It is already prohibited by federal and state law to kill a child who is born alive. The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act would impose new burdensome mandates on physicians, which would stigmatize and ultimately hinder medical providers' ability to provide care and women's access to health care.
