Since 2022, WEG has been consolidating its role in addressing global climate challenges with the launch of the WEG Carbon Neutral Program, which established the company's first commitments:
The most recent and significant recognition of this decarbonization journey came with the approval of WEG's near-term targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The first approved target follows the commitment already made in 2022 for absolute emissions within operations. The second addresses the challenge of reducing scope 3 emissions, related to the value chain and product sales, with an economic intensity target in which emissions are assessed alongside financial performance, ensuring the company's potential for sustainable growth:
Approval by the SBTi represents international credibility, reinforcing WEG's commitment to a science-based decarbonization pathway. In addition to enhancing transparency and trust among stakeholders, it positions the company as a benchmark in social and environmental responsibility and sustainable competitiveness.
"The approval of our emission reduction targets by the SBTi is a decisive step in WEG's sustainability journey. Aligning our goals with international technical criteria demonstrates transparency and credibility to our partners, while reaffirming WEG's role in the energy transition, with technologies and solutions in energy efficiency, operational efficiency, renewable energy, and electric mobility.", Daniel Godinho, Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Director.
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF). It defines and promotes best practices for setting science-based targets, independently assesses corporate targets, and enables companies to play their part in addressing the climate crisis.
