September is National Preparedness Month

Every September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sponsors National Preparedness Month. Severe weather can happen anytime and can include hazardous conditions produced by thunderstorms, damaging winds, tornadoes, large hail, and flooding. Things you will need to think about when creating your emergency plan are:

How will you receive emergency alerts or warnings?

  • What is your shelter plan?
  • What is your evacuation route?
  • What is your family/household's communication plan?
  • Do you need to update your emergency preparedness kit?
  • What are your family's dietary needs?
  • What are your family's medical needs, including prescriptions and equipment
  • What type of disabilities or access/functional needs will you need to plan for, including devices and equipment

You can access a fillable form by visiting www.ready.gov/plan. Make sure you are planning for individuals with disabilities in your home or under your care. Then practice your plan with your family/household. You can sign up to receive emergency notifications from the City of Highland Village by calling or texting "Alert" to 469-946-9966 or by going to the website http://hyper-reach.com/txcityofhighlandvillagesignup.html.
