PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 2, 2025) - Rhode Island Energy's proposed filing to lower summer electricity supply prices was approved by the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission (RIPUC) and will take effect immediately.
In January, Rhode Island Energy (RIE) filed summer electricity supply prices for its "Last Resort Service" (LRS) customers with the RIPUC, which will mean a 16.8 percent decrease compared to winter supply prices. The current summer supply cost for a residential LRS customer is now 10.068 cents/kWh compared to the winter supply cost of 16.387 cents/kWh. When combined with other rate adjustments, the average residential customer using 500 kWh of electricity will see their bill decrease by about $28 per month.
"We've endured one of the coldest Rhode Island winters in years which led to higher energy usage, and higher bills, over the past few months, but the good news is that summer rates are now in effect and will bring some relief to our customers," said Rhode Island Energy President Greg Cornett. "We continue to do everything we can to keep energy costs as low as possible for our customers and we remain ever focused on providing safe and reliable energy across the Ocean State. Even with summer rates taking effect and warmer weather taking hold, it is a good reminder for our customers to take advantage of programs we have in place including payment plans, assistance programs and energy efficiency solutions."
RIE delivers electricity to its customers but does not own power plants that generate that electricity. The company buys power on behalf of customers who do not choose to buy from a competitive supplier, or are not part of a municipal aggregation program, and sells that power to those customers with no markup or profit. LRS prices are updated twice a year - in April and October - and the company does not control the cost of electricity supply on the market.
