Impact Analysis Policy Framework has changed(link is external)

An updated version of the Australian Government's Impact Analysis Policy Framework(link is external) (the framework) is now in effect. The framework is designed to help policy makers better understand the wider impacts of policy proposals before decisions are made.

Whether you're developing policy, designing a program or preparing advice, impact analysis helps ensure decision-makers have a clear picture of the cost and benefits of the policy options.

Under the framework, agencies re-focus impact analysis to ensure key regulatory policies are better shaped by more timely and concise analysis.

Alongside the framework, OIA has released a Practical Guide for Agencies, providing advice and tools to support Impact Analysis throughout policy development.

Good impact analysis helps answer important questions:

• Who will be affected?
• What are the costs and benefits?
• Are there unintended consequences?

By considering these questions early, policy makers can help develop proposals that are better targeted, fit for purpose and deliver stronger outcomes.
