FDNY reminds New Yorkers about lithium-ion battery dangers in new PSA: 'One Battery Can Cause a 5-Alarm Fire'

June 23, 2025

In a newly released Public Service Announcement (PSA), the FDNY is reminding New Yorkers that lithium-ion batteries can be extremely dangerous and potentially deadly if used improperly.

Lithium-ion batteries sparked a 5-alarm fire on Sunday, June 22, 2025, in the Bronx, injuring FDNY firefighters and EMS members, as well as civilians.

"For many years now, the FDNY has been leading the country, if not the world, on bringing awareness to the dangers of lithium-ion batteries," FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said.

Where possible, charge and store lithium-ion batteries OUTSIDE and away from combustibles.

The Department's PSA program is made possible in part with support from the FDNY Foundation, the official nonprofit organization of the Department.
