On Thursday, July 10th, Minister of National Defence, Liviu-Ionuț Moșteanu, received the visit of the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Romania, H.E. Giles Portman, at the MoND headquarters.
The agenda included topics related to bilateral and multilateral defence relations. The two officials reviewed the main elements of the NATO Summit in The Hague and the prospects for cooperation within the EU initiatives, with a focus on the SAFE financial instrument (Security Action for Europe), given the recent signing of the Security and Defence Partnership between the European Union and the United Kingdom.
The talks between the two officials focused on the recent entry into force of the Defence Cooperation Agreement between the two countries, signed in 2024. Minister of National Defence appreciated the United Kingdom's contribution to the implementation of allied deterrence and defence measures in Romania, such as the enhanced Air Policing Missions, the manning of multinational structures, as well as the participation of British soldiers in exercises conducted on Romanian territory. A good example is the United Kingdom's contribution to Exercise STEADFAST DART 25, which took place in February this year.
Minister Moșteanu emphasized the importance of the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United Kingdom. "Our countries are both beneficiaries and providers of security, through active involvement in joint security and defence initiatives, by supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression and increasing support for the Republic of Moldova," the Romanian official stated.
The meeting represented a good opportunity to exchange opinions on current issues, at regional and international levels, highlighting the need for constant dialogue between the two states in the field of defence, in the current geopolitical context.
