As a U.S. Marine veteran, Bret Ressler was looking for a place where he could grow, learn a new profession, and still make a difference.
Bret Ressler, Massage Therapy graduate and owner of Inner Light Wellness.
Rock Valley College became that place, where he not only discovered the education he needed, but also a community that believed in him.
When Bret was considering where to continue his education, he chose RVC because of the massage therapy program and the way the college supports veterans. "I was drawn to Rock Valley College not only because of the quality of the massage therapy program, but also because of the college's commitment to supporting veterans," he said. "RVC took the initiative to extend the Illinois Veterans Grant to cover the Body Craft Massage Therapy program-something that hadn't been done before for this type of education. That level of support and forward-thinking made me feel confident that RVC was the right place to continue my journey."
Jamie Fanara, Massage Training Program Director, praised Bret's commitment and growth. "Welcoming Illinois Veteran Grant recipient and RVC graduate, Bret Ressler, into our Massage Therapy Program family is a powerful reminder of what student success and transformation look like. As a U.S. Marine veteran, ABMP member, and now Reiki Master and Licensed Massage Therapist, Bret embodies resilience, dedication, and the heart of service. His journey shows that massage therapy is more than a career path-it is a calling that blends skill, healing, and purpose to create lasting impact in the lives of others."
Massage therapy felt like the right fit for Bret. He was already practicing Reiki and energy work and wanted to do more to help people. "I was drawn to this field because of my passion for helping people heal, restore balance, and live more fully in their bodies," he said.
During his time at RVC, Bret also gave back to the community. One highlight of Bret's journey was volunteering at RVC's 60th anniversary, where he offered free chair massages. "Hearing alumni stories and seeing how their careers have grown was inspiring and gave me even more motivation for my own path," he shared.
The program gave him both skills and confidence. "RVC gave me the education and foundation I needed to pursue licensure and begin building my career as a massage therapist," he said. "The program not only trained me in practical skills but also gave me confidence, professionalism, and a clear vision for my future."
Balancing school and family wasn't always easy, but Bret says the instructors made a big difference. "The instructors in the massage therapy program were amazing, supportive, knowledgeable, and invested in our success. Their mentorship and encouragement made a huge difference in my confidence as a student and a future professional."
Bret is now applying what he learned at RVC in his career. He works at BodyCraft Wellness, the clinic connected to the program, and is also starting his own practice, Inner Light Wellness. "In both spaces, I combine therapeutic massage with Reiki and other modalities. My goal is to help clients with relaxation, stress management, pain relief, and functional mobility, while carrying forward the strong foundation I gained through Rock Valley College."
Looking back, Bret says RVC has changed his life. "The experience was transformative-I gained skills for a new career, discovered more about myself, and uncovered new ways I can serve others. Most importantly, I created friendships that will last a lifetime."
"Don't hesitate! RVC offers excellent programs with real-world application, supportive instructors, and opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. If you put in the effort, you'll leave prepared for success."
