Poor Seymour Krelborn, pining away for his co-worker Audrey at Mushnik's flower shop on Skid Row, but too timid to reveal his true feelings. It's no wonder that when he discovers an odd talking plant after a solar eclipse, he affectionately names it Audrey II. Little does he know what's in store-or how dramatically his life will change.
For the rest of the story, get your tickets to TLU's production of Little Shop of Horrors, a collaborative effort between the university's Dramatic Media Department and School of Music that promises to bring the songs from the beloved musical to life in a concert version of the show.
Little Shop of Horrors started as a huge off-Broadway hit back in the 80s (loosely based on the original 1960 movie). The musical was adapted for the 1986 film version, and finally, the off-Broadway show was revived on the Broadway stage in 2003-earning it an extremely long cumulative run and countless adoring fans.
The concert version of the show, which will be presented in TLU's Studio Theatre on January 15-17, will offer simple staging and basic costuming, but all of the songs fans have come to love.
"It's been an audience favorite and crowd pleaser for decades, both as a movie and musical theatre piece," said Professor David Legore, chair of TLU's Dramatic Media Department. "The songs are infectious and memorable. The story is comically dark and filled with iconic characters and campy fun."
Legore worked with Dramatic Media Professor Shannon Ivey and Dr. Melissa Lubecke Sarabia, assistant professor in the School of Music, to get the show staged and ready. "It's been fun to work with colleagues in the arts, with a blended cast of students from both programs," Legore said.
Showtimes are 7:30 p.m., January 15-17, and tickets can be purchased right here: TLU Dramatic Media - Texas Lutheran University event tickets from TicketSource. The Studio Theatre is located on campus in the Weston Center for the Performing Arts.
