Iowa City celebrates Waste and Recycling Workers Week

The week of June 17, 2026, Waste and Recycling Workers Week, is celebrated across the country to thank and honor all the people working in the waste and recycling industry.

The proper collection and disposal of trash, recycling, and organic waste are integral to preventing litter, disease, and negative environmental impact. The City of Iowa City values and celebrates workers in the public and private trash, recycling, and organic waste industries in our community.

Mayoral proclamation commemorates the week

To commemorate the week and celebrate the workers, Mayor Bruce Teague proclaimed the week of June 17, 2026, as Waste and Recycling Workers Week in Iowa City at the June 2 City Council meeting.

The best way you can say "thank you" to those who collect your waste materials is to use your programs correctly. Below are resources that can help you do just that!

Resources

  • City of Iowa City Curbside Collection : Curbside customers can view program changes and learn how to correctly use trash, recycling, composting, and bulky item collection programs at icgov.org/curbside.
  • Battery recycling : Improper disposal of batteries in the regular garbage or recycling is a leading cause of landfill and recycling facility fires.
