Big Oil's price spikes cost Californians billions at the gas pump. But these price spikes are preventable, and the State Assembly is moving forward with the bill AB X2-1 to hold the oil industry accountable. Assemblymember Alex Lee, a principal co-author of the bill, released the following statement after the bill passed the Assembly floor today:

"Big Oil is reaping profits off the backs of hard working Californians, and we are taking action to stop the oil industry's greed," said Assemblymember Lee, who serves on the Assembly Petroleum and Gasoline Supply Committee. "Oil refineries are failing to maintain enough fuel supply when they go offline for maintenance. They're pushing up gas prices and maximizing their profits. By empowering the California Energy Commission to potentially mandate that oil companies keep minimum fuel reserves, AB X2-1 ensures they can't use a 'shortage' of oil inventory as an excuse to spike prices. During this special session, we're building on our work over the last few years to open up even more of Big Oil's books."
