In celebration of Earth Day, Attorney General Charity Clark today announced the conclusion of the Attorney General's Office's sixth annual Earth Day Essay Challenge. This annual event invited Vermont's 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to submit essays or other writings about Earth Day and the environment. The challenge began in February and ran through mid-April.
The Attorney General's Office received over 50 essays from students at schools in communities across Vermont, including Bennington, Bethel, Burlington, Fletcher, South Burlington, Stamford, Sunderland, Troy, and Windsor. The writing included a rich variety of pieces reflecting the students' personal experiences with the natural world in Vermont, creative poems and short stories, factual information about Vermont and its environment, and ideas to help protect the earth.
"I look forward to the essay challenge every year," said Attorney General Charity Clark. "My office really appreciates the time these students took to put their thoughts on paper and share them with us. The essays give us a lot to think about, and also help inspire us to do our part to the future of our beautiful state for the next generation."
The essays submitted to the Attorney General's Office for the Earth Day Essay Challenge are posted on the Office's website for the public to enjoy. Attorney General Clark and members of the Attorney General's Environmental Protection Unit will provide individual feedback to each student who submitted an essay.
Students from the following schools participated in this year's essay challenge:
Bethel Elementary School
Fletcher Elementary School
Monument Elementary School
Orchard Elementary School
Rick Marcotte Central School
Stamford School
Sunderland Elementary School
Troy School
Windsor School
The "winner" of this year's challenge - decided by pulling a name out of a hat - is Julius from Rick Marcotte Central School. Attorney General Clark and members of the Environmental Protection Unit are looking forward to visiting Rick Marcotte Central School in South Burlington later this spring.
