Orange alert: risk of local flooding along the Alzette and Sûre rivers

In view of the precipitation expected over the next few hours in the form of snow, which will then turn to rain, with accumulations of up to 30l/m2, the bad weather risk assessment unit (CERI) met at midday to take stock of the flood situation.

The entire country (except for the Moselle) has been placed under orange flood alert. The rainfall forecast for the next few hours will cause levels to rise from this evening and they will continue to rise until Thursday afternoon.

On the Alzette, the orange alert level is expected to be exceeded at around midnight. Water levels in the regions along the Alzette, and particularly at Hesperange, Pfaffenthal, Steinsel, Mersch and Ettelbruck, may reach or even exceed the red alert level at some gauging stations in the early hours of Thursday morning. Further developments during the night are still uncertain.

On the Sûre, the orange alert level is expected to be exceeded at the Diekirch and Bollendorf gauging stations from the early hours of Thursday morning.

The level of the Moselle will also rise from this evening. During Thursday, the Moselle will be placed under yellow flood alert. However, it is unlikely that the orange alert level will be reached.

The CERI continues to monitor the situation.

The authorities are warning the public to avoid all travel in the regions concerned and to respect the roads that have been closed and the diversions that have been put in place.
