The future is in the cloud, it seems, with cloud computing tipped to be a business essential by 2028, and global spending on public cloud services expected to exceed USD 1 trillion in 2027. Already it is estimated that the cloud now stores around half of the world's data.
Yet, as use of the cloud grows, so too do the opportunities for cyber-attacks. From 2022 to 2023 threats to cloud security increased by 110% and some say that more than 80% of data breaches in 2023 involved data stored in the cloud.
Cloud technology provides a number of benefits to organizations, providing easy access to data, disaster recovery and reducing costs. Yet securing information in the cloud is tricky because of its dynamic nature, making it difficult to monitor. While there is no shortage of tools in the marketplace aimed at securing cloud services, cloud security remains an issue for many organizations. What is needed is a holistic approach that enables businesses to put in place the controls and processes that are specific to them.
International standards such as those developed by the joint IEC and ISO committee for cyber security, SC 27, provide guidance and processes to keep systems cyber secure. These include ISO/IEC 27002, which provides information security controls as well as ISO/IEC 27017 which builds on ISO/IEC 27002 to provide additional security guidance for the cloud. It covers everything from terminology to company information security policies, access control, supplier relationships, business continuity and much more.
To help organizations make the most out of these standards, the IEC Academy is hosting a free webinar, featuring international experts sharing practical tips and knowledge on the use of the standards.
The webinar, held on 20 January 2025 from 12.00-13.00 UTC will also provide latest updates on ISO/IEC 27017 and provide the opportunity for attendees to discuss aspects such as risk management, secure access and disaster recovery.
