Remission Medical Welcomes Richard J. Mata, MD, MS, as Senior Advisor

Physician and medical informatics expert brings expertise in clinical decision support, EHR workflows and responsible AI to Remission Medical's Advisory Consultant Program

RICHMOND, Va., September 10, 2026 - Remission Medical today announced that Richard J. Mata, MD, MS, has joined its Advisory Consultant Program as a Senior Advisor, bringing a multidisciplinary background spanning clinical medicine, medical informatics, healthcare technology and enterprise systems.

Mata joins a growing group of experienced healthcare leaders and subject-matter experts providing strategic perspective and counsel as Remission Medical expands its partnerships with health systems and specialty practices nationwide.

"Technology can expand what's possible in healthcare, but only when it works for the clinicians and patients using it," said Blake Wehman, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Remission Medical. "Richard understands both sides of that equation. He brings the clinical perspective to understand what care teams need and the technical depth to think critically about how data, EHR workflows and emerging AI tools can support better care."

Access to rheumatology care remains one of the most persistent challenges in modern healthcare. Patients often wait months for evaluation, delaying diagnosis and treatment for autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. Remission Medical works with health systems and specialty practices to expand rheumatology capacity while preserving continuity of care and operating within existing health system infrastructure, including EHRs, scheduling workflows, billing structures and care teams.

Remission Medical established its Advisory Consultant Program to bring additional healthcare clinical, operational and strategic perspectives to that work as the company continues to grow.

Mata's clinical training spans Internal Medicine, Family Practice and Medical Informatics, giving him experience across primary care, chronic disease management and the operational realities of clinical workflows. He earned a Master of Science in Medical Informatics from Oregon Health & Science University and is completing a Master of Science in AI Engineering through the Quantic School of Business and Technology.

His technical career has included roles in programming, network administration and SQL consulting, as well as enterprise systems work. Earlier in his career, Mata served with the Texas State Treasury under Treasurer Ann Richards, contributing to statewide information systems and operational modernization efforts. He later served as an Assistant Professor of Health Services Research at Texas State University, where he taught the university's first certificate course in Medical Informatics.

His areas of expertise include clinical decision-support architecture, EHR-embedded screening logic and NLP-driven signal detection, clinical data modeling, workflow engineering and AI governance, validation and bias mitigation.

"The most effective healthcare technology starts with the clinical problem, not the technology," said Mata. "Remission Medical's model creates an opportunity to think carefully about how clinical expertise, data and technology can work together within existing health-system workflows to expand access while maintaining the quality and integrity of care."

As a Senior Advisor, Mata will provide strategic perspective and counsel at the intersection of clinical care, medical informatics and healthcare technology as Remission Medical continues to strengthen its health-system partnerships and expand access to rheumatology care.
