WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement after the U.S. Senate passed a resolution celebrating Black History Month, which he is an original cosponsor of:
"American history cannot be told without Black history. And Black history is American history - full stop. Black Americans have played an integral role in building and shaping America - from trailblazing innovations in medicine, science, transportation, and the arts, to fighting for the civil rights that every one of us enjoys today. This month and every month, we must be intentional about honoring and telling the story of the incredible contributions Black Americans have made to our great nation. And we must also fully, honestly, and openly admit to the terrible wrongs that Black Americans have had to overcome throughout that same history.
"I am proud to be an original cosponsor of the Black History Month resolution that passed the U.S. Senate, and I will continue to stand firm to fight for equity and justice for all New Mexicans, in every community, in every county, without exception."
