Baraga Corrections Officer Joseph Perala Announced as the 2026 MDOC Officer of the Year

LANSING, Mich. - Joseph Perala, a Corrections Officer at the Baraga Correctional Facility in the Upper Peninsula, has been named the 2026 Michigan Department of Corrections Officer of the Year.

The Corrections Officer of the Year Award is chosen by the Michigan Correctional Officers' Training Council, comprised of representatives from MDOC, Michigan Corrections Organization, law enforcement, and higher education. This honor is annually awarded to one corrections officer statewide who demonstrates exceptional professionalism and serves as positive role models for their peers.

Officer Perala has been an MDOC corrections officer in the Upper Peninsula for 19 years where he exemplifies professionalism, leadership, and a commitment to safety. He responds decisively during critical incidents and continually seeks out additional training to strengthen facility safety.

"Joseph Perala has earned a reputation for his calm demeanor, willingness to go the extra mile, and exceptional mentorship of new staff," said Michigan Department of Corrections Director Heidi E. Washington. "His chain of command at the facility calls him 'a tremendous asset' and 'a positive role model', reflecting why he represents the best of our department. On behalf of MDOC and the State of Michigan, I commend Officer Perala for this well-earned honor."

Earlier in his career, Officer Perala played an important role in the Incentives in Segregation Program pilot at Alger Correctional Facility, serving as part of the housing unit staff during its development and early implementation. The program, now used in multiple facilities statewide, helps incarcerated individuals transition more successfully from segregation back to the general population. His involvement shows his commitment to evolving, evidence-based correctional practices and his willingness to support department wide improvements.

He has also been a dedicated contributor to the MDOC Mentorship Program, helping develop countless new corrections officers. His guidance, experience, and commitment to professional growth have had a lasting impact on staff development and the department's future leadership.

Outside of work, Officer Perala leads an active outdoor lifestyle in the U.P. that keeps him grounded and connected to his community. He enjoys fishing, bird hunting, hiking, and rockhounding; activities that reflect his appreciation for nature and a well-rounded personal life.

Joseph Perala will officially receive the award at the 2026 MDOC Employee Appreciation Banquet on May 7.
